Alicia Kibwaa
Alicia Kibwaa is the first black cheerleading gym owner in Nova Scotia. She has coached many teams throughout her twenty years as a gym owner competing with teams both on a national and international level. Representation matters and over the years, Halifax Cheer Elite, has set a standard of showcasing diversity both with their athletes and coaches. “I love watching athletes and parents from diverse backgrounds build lasting relationships that carry them beyond our gym.” Alicia is a teacher at Nelson Whynder Elementary School in the historic black community of North Preston. Having worked as both a classroom teacher and a literacy interventionist, she continues to advocate for educating our youth. Alicia also works with the Cultural Academic Enrichment Program through Black Educators Association. She is excited to be exploring new talents as a writer and has published a levelled text, highlighting North Preston, through Pearson Publishing as part of their Celebrate Canada series. “I want young black students to see themselves celebrated and reflected in the books they read.” She is excited to continue to explore opportunities to educate, celebrate and support youth in our communities.
