Dr. Barb Hamilton-Hinch

Barb is from the African Nova Scotian communities of Beechville and Cherrybrook. She attended Dalhousie University, completed a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management. She was employed by the City of Halifax and later completed a Master’s of Arts. Barb worked for the Nova Scotia Gambia Association in The Gambia, then became the first Black female General Manager of the Community YMCA. Barb later joined the Black Educators Association. She has a Bachelor of Education from Mount St. Vincent University. In 2002 she became the Black Student Advisor at Dalhousie and pursued a PhD, while working full-time, raising two (sometimes three) boys. She completed her PhD in 2016 and is said to be the first African Nova Scotian to graduate with a PhD from Dalhousie. In 2008 she started teaching full-time, is an Associate Professor and in 2020 became the Assistant Vice Provost of Equity and Inclusion. Barb is the co lead for Improving the Health Outcomes for People of African Descent Research cluster, one of the founders of Imhotep Legacy Academy-to increase Black students in STEM, co-chair of Promoting Leadership in Health for African Nova Scotians (to increase Black students in Health). Her research examines the impact of structural, systemic, and institutional racism on diverse populations.
