Gina Jones-Wilson

From the community of Upper Hammonds Plains, Gina has one son, Nico. She has been volunteering in the community for over 45 years in various capacities, starting in 1979 as a member of the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Recreation Association holding the positions of treasurer, vice president and president. In December 2005 she took on the position of President of the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Development Assoc. Her community currently has no access to public transit so it has become her goal to bring programs and activities in-house to residents, her passion is working with the youth and seniors, one she gets to mentor, the other she gets to learn from and pass along their knowledge. Gina is known by the youth in the community as Ms. G, as she thinks it is important that our Black youth understand what respect means and how we address our elders. Some of her major accomplishments were: Renovation of her community’s old historical fire hall into a youth recreation and arts center, affordable summer day camp program, weekly youth programming, seniors programming, organized the Class of 1945 -1960 1st UHP Old School Reunion, awarded in November 2006 by the Halifax Regional Fire Service as being the first female African Nova Scotian in the Halifax Regional Municipality and the Province of Nova Scotia.
