Rodney Small

Rodney is a father, community builder, mentor, coach, and social innovator from Halifax's North End (Uniacke Square) and a seventh-generation African Nova Scotian. His dedication to improving the lives of his community is evident in his action-oriented approach to addressing issues faced by marginalized groups. Rodney holds a Bachelor of Management degree from Dalhousie University, focusing on leadership and organizations. He founded the One North End Community Economic Development Society to tackle racial health and wealth disparities in Nova Scotia through collective impact strategies. He advocates for social justice, highlighted in the short film "RDS vs. A Story of Race and Justice," which follows his experiences with the justice system and a landmark court case regarding "apprehension of bias." The Nova Scotia House of Assembly has recognized his contributions. Other awards include the Live More Distinction Award, the Bubby Mooers Award, the Amazing Grace Award, Internship of the Year, and the Outstanding Service Award. Above all, Rodney values gratitude and his faith in Jesus, which inspire his empathy and commitment to effecting positive change.
